Girl Scout Sewing Weekend

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic has stopped pretty much everything, it hasn’t stopped our Girl Scout troop. Violet’s troop is bridging from Brownies to Juniors and as one of their troop co-leaders, I wanted to make it special. So, I spent an entire Saturday sewing patches on 10 Girl Scout’s Junior vests.

Here’s a look at the process.

And, all ten are done!

I don’t know how many people know how much I love the Girl Scout program. When Violet was ready to leave pre-school and head to elementary school, a couple of the moms at her pre-school were talking about how sad it was to see the kids go off to different schools and lose touch. So, we decided to form our own Girl Scout troop to push us to keep regular play dates so the girls would stay in touch.

In August, 2016 we started a Daisy troop. Since then, we’ve seen our girls grow leaps and bounds. Most of the original girls are still in the troop and we’ve even added a few more along the way. It’s been quite a journey and I’m so glad my co-leader, Alison, suggested it. She was a Girl Scout when she was little so she knew a little of what was in store, unlike me. We’ve had so much fun with our girls and it’s been one of the greatest experiences.

Today, our girls are enter their fifth year of the Girl Scout program. Alison and I are still their troop leaders and have made life-long friends ourselves through the troop. Additionally, I signed on as the Service Unit Treasurer about a year and a half ago. While it’s not my favorite role (because math), I love how involved I’ve become at the Service Unit level. I was also able to reconnect with a high school friend, Holly, through the Service Unit and now we are both a part of the the team that leads the troops in the Monrovia/Duarte area.

I am so grateful for Girl Scouts, our girls, the friends we’ve all made, the difference we make in the girls’ lives, and the fun we have. I’m so glad that I can make a difference and inspire these girls. It is one of my greatest joys.
